Talk to relatives and record what they tell you.  Be sure to ask for middle names of family members.  This can really help if you find 5 different John Smith's.

TIPS and TRICKS:

Get a map!  

 

Some records might list Victoria as your place of residence, and others might say Saanich.  You know they are probably the same, but would someone else?

If you can't find records that you are looking for, try variations on spelling, e.g. Smith might be Smyth.

Most of the Immigrants who arrived from Europe, landed in Halifax at Pier 21.  The Canadian Museum of Immigration documents some of that history.
